Signing and Exchange of Notes on Grant Aid “Food Assistance Programme (through WFP)” for the Republic of Chad

On 7 September, in N'Djamena, the capital of the Republic of Chad, Ambassador MINAMI and Mr. Jean-Noël Gentile, Representative and Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Chad, signed and exchanged notes concerning Japan's grant aid of JPY 200 million (approximately CFAF 734 million) under the “Food Assistance Programme (through WFP).”
Chad is facing an urgent food and nutrition crisis, with 6.72 million people suffering from undernutrition due to a combination of factors, including the influx of refugees and returnees resulting from instability in neighbouring countries, poor harvests caused by floods and other climate-related disasters, rising prices, and increasing pressure on food supply and demand.
 
This cooperation aims to strengthen food security and improve nutrition in Chad through food assistance provided by WFP. With Japan's support, WFP will procure 333 metric tons of food and assist more than 23,000 people, including approximately 16,400 schoolchildren. School meals will help children, particularly girls, attend and remain in school while improving their nutrition. The programme will also provide preventive nutrition assistance to young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and other vulnerable groups.

At the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), held in August 2025, Japan expressed its commitment to strengthening food security and supporting sustainable agriculture, forestry and fisheries in Africa. This cooperation represents a concrete step towards fulfilling that commitment. It is also expected to further strengthen Japan-Chad relations and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
